Understanding pay conversion
When you're job hunting, comparing offers, or budgeting, you often need to know what your earnings look like on different timescales. An hourly worker might want to know their annual income; someone earning a monthly salary might want to calculate their hourly rate. This calculator handles all those conversions instantly, using your actual work schedule.
The formula
Annual salary = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Weeks per year
Once you have the annual figure, dividing by 52 gives weekly pay, dividing by 12 gives monthly pay, and multiplying by hours per week gives weekly totals.
Worked example
Let's say you earn $28 per hour, work 40 hours per week, and your employer counts 50 working weeks per year (accounting for holidays and unpaid leave).
Step 1: Calculate annual salary
- $28/hour × 40 hours/week × 50 weeks/year = $56,000/year
Step 2: Break down to other periods
- Weekly: $56,000 ÷ 52 weeks = $1,077/week
- Monthly: $56,000 ÷ 12 months = $4,667/month (approximate)
- Daily (5-day week): $28 × 8 hours = $224/day
Now imagine you see a job posting advertising $4,500/month. Using the calculator in reverse:
- $4,500 × 12 = $54,000/year
- $54,000 ÷ 50 weeks = $1,080/week
- $1,080 ÷ 40 hours = $27/hour

Adjusting for your actual work year
The "weeks per year" field is crucial because it varies by location and employment type. In the US, a standard full-time job assumes 52 weeks, but most employees get 2–4 weeks of paid vacation, plus public holidays. A realistic figure is often 50 weeks (2 weeks off) or 49 weeks (3 weeks off). Some roles offer more; others (like contract or gig work) may use all 52.
If you're unsure, count your actual paid weeks: total days off (vacation + holidays) ÷ 5 = weeks off. Subtract from 52.
For part-time or casual work with irregular schedules, use your average hours per week and weeks you typically work per year.
Tips for accurate conversions
- Include overtime in your average: If you regularly work 45 hours but are paid for 40, use 45 in the calculator to see your real earnings.
- Distinguish gross from net: This calculator shows gross pay (before tax). Your take-home will be lower after income tax, social security, and other deductions.
- Account for bonuses separately: If you receive a performance bonus or annual lump sum, add it to your annual figure after using the calculator, or spread it across the year for a realistic monthly estimate.
- Check benefits: Salary comparisons should also consider health insurance, retirement contributions, and other benefits, which can add significant value beyond the hourly rate.
- Currency and location matter: $28/hour in San Francisco has different purchasing power than in rural areas. Always compare salaries within the same region.
Common mistakes
The most frequent error is forgetting to adjust the weeks-per-year figure. Using 52 weeks when you actually get 4 weeks off inflates your real earning potential by roughly 8%. Similarly, some people confuse gross and net—the calculator shows what you earn before taxes are withheld, not what hits your bank account.
Another pitfall: mixing part-time and full-time assumptions. If a job advertises "$20/hour, 30 hours/week," don't compare it directly to a $28/hour full-time role without calculating the annual totals first.
