What this calculator does

Tire codes printed on your sidewall contain three key measurements. This calculator converts them into the actual physical dimensions of your tire and shows how many times it rotates per mile of driving. These figures matter for speedometer accuracy, fuel economy estimates, and understanding how your engine behaves on the highway.

The formula

Tire Diameter (inches) = (Section Width × Aspect Ratio ÷ 100 × 2 + Rim Diameter) ÷ 25.4

Once you have diameter, circumference is simply π × diameter, and revolutions per mile equals 63,360 ÷ circumference (since there are 63,360 inches in a mile).

Worked example

Let's work through a common tire size: 225/65R17

Step 1: Gather the inputs

  • Section width: 225 mm
  • Aspect ratio: 65%
  • Rim diameter: 17 inches

Step 2: Calculate sidewall height

Sidewalls appear on both top and bottom of the tire. Multiply section width by aspect ratio, then divide by 100:

225 × 65 ÷ 100 = 146.25 mm

Since there are two sidewalls: 146.25 × 2 = 292.5 mm

Step 3: Convert to inches and add rim diameter

292.5 mm ÷ 25.4 = 11.52 inches (total sidewall height)

Total tire diameter = 11.52 + 17 = 28.52 inches

Step 4: Calculate circumference

Circumference = π × 28.52 = 89.61 inches

Step 5: Find revolutions per mile

Revolutions per mile = 63,360 ÷ 89.61 = 706.3 revolutions

This means your tire completes about 706 full rotations for every mile driven.

Step 6: Convert to metric (optional)

Diameter in millimeters: 28.52 × 25.4 = 724.4 mm

Circumference in centimeters: 89.61 × 2.54 = 227.6 cm

Practical uses

Speedometer verification: If you replace your tires with a significantly different size, your speedometer may read inaccurately. A larger tire diameter means you travel farther per rotation, so the speedometer reads lower than actual speed. Conversely, a smaller tire reads higher.
