What this calculator does
This tool lets you quickly combine or find the difference between two time durations. Enter hours, minutes and seconds for each period, choose whether to add or subtract, and get the result instantly. It's useful for tracking total work hours across multiple shifts, calculating elapsed time between events, or figuring out how much time remains on a project.
How it works
The calculator treats each duration as a single total number of seconds, performs the operation (addition or subtraction), then converts the result back into hours, minutes and seconds format.
When you add, both durations combine into one total. When you subtract, the second duration is removed from the first. If subtraction would produce a negative result, the calculator displays that clearly so you know one duration is longer than the other.
The conversion happens automatically: 60 seconds = 1 minute, and 60 minutes = 1 hour. Any "overflow" (for example, 90 seconds) is properly converted into minutes and seconds (1 minute 30 seconds).
The formula
Total seconds = (hours₁ × 3600) + (minutes₁ × 60) + seconds₁ ± [(hours₂ × 3600) + (minutes₂ × 60) + seconds₂]
Then convert back: hours = total ÷ 3600, remainder ÷ 60 = minutes, remainder = seconds.
Worked example
Scenario: You work two shifts today. Morning shift is 3 hours 45 minutes 30 seconds. Afternoon shift is 4 hours 20 minutes 15 seconds. What's your total time worked?
Step 1: Convert both to seconds
- Shift 1: (3 × 3600) + (45 × 60) + 30 = 10,800 + 2,700 + 30 = 13,530 seconds
- Shift 2: (4 × 3600) + (20 × 60) + 15 = 14,400 + 1,200 + 15 = 15,615 seconds
Step 2: Add them
- 13,530 + 15,615 = 29,145 seconds
Step 3: Convert back to hours:minutes:seconds
- Hours: 29,145 ÷ 3600 = 8 remainder 345
- Minutes: 345 ÷ 60 = 5 remainder 45
- Seconds: 45
Result: 8 hours 5 minutes 45 seconds
Subtraction example: If you wanted to know how much longer the afternoon shift was:
- 15,615 − 13,530 = 2,085 seconds
- 2,085 ÷ 3600 = 0 hours, remainder 2,085
- 2,085 ÷ 60 = 34 minutes, remainder 45
- Result: 34 minutes 45 seconds longer
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing the order for subtraction: The calculator subtracts the second duration from the first. If you enter 2 hours first and 5 hours second, then subtract, you'll get a negative result (−3 hours). Check which duration should be larger if you're expecting a positive answer.
Entering seconds over 59: The calculator accepts any number of seconds, but if you type 90 seconds, it's cleaner to enter 1 minute 30 seconds instead. The result will be correct either way, but it's easier to read input that's already broken into standard minute/second chunks.
Forgetting about carry-over: When adding times, always verify the result makes sense. 45 minutes + 30 minutes should give you 1 hour 15 minutes, not 75 minutes (though numerically they're the same, the formatted output is clearer).
Use this calculator for scheduling, project time tracking, fitness routines, travel planning, or any situation where you need to combine or compare time periods.
