How it works
This converter transforms measurements between two height systems: the imperial system (feet and inches) used primarily in the United States, United Kingdom, and a few other nations, and the metric system (centimeters) used internationally. The conversion relies on fixed mathematical relationships between these units.
When you enter a height in feet and inches, the calculator converts both components to centimeters using standard conversion factors. If you input centimeters instead, it reverses the process, breaking the result into whole feet and remaining inches. The tool handles decimal values smoothly, so you can enter precise measurements like 5.5 feet or 172.5 cm.
The formula
Total height (cm) = (feet × 30.48) + (inches × 2.54)
To convert centimeters back to feet and inches: divide the total centimeters by 30.48 to get feet (including decimals), then multiply the decimal portion by 12 to get the remaining inches.
Worked example
Converting 5 feet 9 inches to centimeters:
- Multiply feet by 30.48: 5 × 30.48 = 152.4 cm
- Multiply inches by 2.54: 9 × 2.54 = 22.86 cm
- Add both values: 152.4 + 22.86 = 175.26 cm
Converting 180 cm to feet and inches:
- Divide centimeters by 30.48: 180 ÷ 30.48 = 5.906 feet
- The whole number is 5 feet
- Take the decimal (0.906) and multiply by 12: 0.906 × 12 = 10.87 inches
- Result: 5 feet 10.87 inches (or roughly 5'11")
Things to watch
Rounding matters in practical contexts. When you see "5 feet 10.87 inches," many people round to the nearest half-inch (5'11") for everyday use. Medical or sports records, however, often require more precision. If you're comparing heights across documents, check whether the original measurement was rounded.
Regional conventions differ. In the US and UK, height is typically expressed as feet and inches (e.g., 6'2"). In metric countries, centimeters are standard. When communicating internationally—for example, on dating apps, medical forms, or athletic profiles—knowing both formats prevents confusion.
Decimal feet vs. feet and inches. Some calculators or systems express height as decimal feet (e.g., 5.75 feet). This converter uses the more common feet-and-inches format, but the math works the same way: 5.75 feet = 5 feet 9 inches.
